Dual Language Immersion Programs
Utah Dual language Immersion (DLI) is a state supported program in which students spend half the day in English with one teacher and half the day with another teacher in a second language. Park City School District offers programs with Spanish and French as second languages. The mission of Dual Immersion is to prepare linguistically and culturally competent students who can successfully compete in a complex global economy.
There will be no change to the Dual Language Immersion kinder class for 2013-14. The district is currently studying the effectiveness of the program and sustainability of DLI kindergarten but no changes would be enacted until 2014-15.
The district has organized a Dual Language Enrollment Committee to examine the preferences applied in the lottery process for admission into the Dual Immersion Programs. The committee met and is conducting a survey to accurately predict future enrollment of siblings in the program. Additional surveys and other forms of contributing input from constituents will be conducted as part of the on-going study. Please send any input to the school's parent representative on the DLI Parent Advisory Council. More information will be posted after Nov. 12, 2013.
The superintendent has added a teacher to the 2nd grade Dual Immersion Team at Mcpolin Elementary School.
The full implementation plan for the DLI program in 6th grade in the Park City School District is currently being discussed by administrators and the superintendent. The district is committed to the state model which requires students in 6th grade, at a minimum, to study Reading and/or Language Arts and the Foundations of Social Studies in the target language and all other subjects in English, including English Language Arts, Math, Science, Art, Music etc. The state curriculum is aligned to both state and national standards and students are tested in English on standardized assessments and in Spanish. The District Parent Advisory Council will provide input on the implementation plan.
