SHARP Survey

This winter, our district will be collaborating with the Summit County Health Department and the Utah Department of Health and Human Services to administer the Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) Survey to students in grades 6, 8, 10 & 12. 

The administration of the SHARP survey occurs every other year and this collaboration is a long standing project that our community has participated in for the past decade. The data collected from the survey helps our district and many other Park City groups plan prevention and intervention programs to best serve our students by understanding mental health needs, improving school safety and belonging, combating alcohol and other drug use, and minimizing violence in our schools and communities.

The SHARP survey is completely anonymous and voluntary. Parents must opt-in for their child to be able to participate in the survey. Higher participation rates provide the most meaningful data for our community. This year, we gathered parental consent during fall registration. Only students who have received parental consent will be able to participate in the survey. Secondary schools will be administering the SHARP survey at the end of February.

The SHARP data is of vital importance to not only our district but the greater Park City community. The data gathered helps:

• Determine the needs for our community which helps prevention and behavioral health providers plan services for the upcoming years.
• Us evaluate the effectiveness of current prevention and intervention efforts and to make appropriate adjustments.
• Give youth an opportunity for their experiences and voices to be heard.

Just a few vital statistics we’ve learned from previous SHARP survey data that have helped inform and drive district prevention and intervention efforts are:

1. 86% of PCSD students report feeling safe at school (compared to 85% state-wide).
2. 94% of surveyed students report feeling somewhat or very safe in their neighborhood (compared with 89% state-wide).
3. As many as 28% of PCSD students report having used vaping products in their lifetime (compared to 18% statewide); as many as 12% in the past 30 days.
4. 23% report being ‘somewhat’ or ‘very worried’ about being bullied (compared with 26% state-wide)
5. 85% report thinking it’s ok to seek help and talk to a professional counselor, therapist, or doctor if you’ve been feeling very sad, hopeless, or suicidal (compared to 82% state-wide).
6. 96% report wearing a seat belt “most of the time” or “Always” when riding in a car driven by someone else.

Este invierno, nuestro distrito colaborará con el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Summit y el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Utah para administrar la Encuesta de Salud Estudiantil y Prevención de Riesgos (SHARP) a los estudiantes de los grados 6°, 8°, 10° y 12°. 

La administración de la encuesta SHARP se realiza cada dos años y esta colaboración es un proyecto antiguo de datos en el que nuestra comunidad ha participado durante la última década. Los datos recolectados de la encuesta ayudan a nuestro distrito y a muchos otros grupos de Park City a planificar programas de prevención e intervención para servir mejor a nuestros estudiantes al comprender las necesidades de salud mental, mejorar la seguridad escolar y el sentido de pertenencia, combatir el consumo de alcohol y otras drogas, y minimizar la violencia en nuestras escuelas y comunidades.

La encuesta SHARP es completamente anónima y voluntaria. Los padres deben dar su consentimiento para que su hijo(a) pueda participar en la encuesta. Las tasas de participación más altas proporcionan los datos más significativos para nuestra comunidad. Este año, recolectamos el consentimiento de los padres durante la inscripción de otoño. Solo los estudiantes que han recibido el consentimiento parental podrán participar en la encuesta. Las escuelas secundarias administrarán la encuesta SHARP a finales de febrero.

Algunas estadísticas vitales que hemos aprendido de los datos de las encuestas SHARP anteriores y que han ayudado a informar e impulsar los esfuerzos de prevención e intervención del distrito son:

1. El 86% de los estudiantes del PCSD informa sentirse seguro en la escuela (en comparación con el 85% a nivel estatal).
2. El 94% de los estudiantes encuestados afirma sentirse algo o muy seguro en su vecindario (en comparación con el 89% a nivel estatal).
3. Hasta un 28% de los estudiantes del PCSD informa haber utilizado productos de vapeo en su vida (en comparación con el 18% a nivel estatal); hasta un 12% en los últimos 30 días.
4. El 23% informa estar “algo” o “muy preocupado” por ser acosado (en comparación con el 26% a nivel estatal).
5. El 85% informa pensar que está bien buscar ayuda y hablar con un consejero profesional, terapeuta o médico si se ha estado sintiendo muy triste, desesperanzado o suicida (en comparación con el 82% a nivel estatal).
6. El 96% informa usar el cinturón de seguridad “la mayoría de las veces” o “siempre” cuando viaja en un automóvil conducido por otra persona.
