Artificial Intelligence Guidance for Students and Families

MagicSchool

Teachers use MagicSchool to create AI-powered learning activities for students that are linked to specific learning standards. Teachers see transcripts of all students' interactions and insights into their understanding. 

Students are not able to access MagicSchool independently. Rooms are only available once created by a teacher and assigned to a student.

PCSD Academic Integrity Policy:

Students are expected to complete all work honestly and to uphold the values of academic integrity. Cheating, plagiarism, the unauthorized possession or use of exams, papers, computer programs, or other materials, as well as the unapproved use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to generate or complete work, are all considered academic dishonesty and will be addressed according to PCSD Policy 9000 (Academic Integrity) and 10100 (Safe Schools).

1. Proactive Measures for Students and Families:

Use only AI tools that the teacher has allowed for each assignment. 

Understand your teacher’s expectations for each assignment. If you have any questions about whether a certain use of AI is allowed, seek clarification.

Special note for parents and guardians:

Students’ district-assigned devices are filtered, and we monitor and block unauthorized sites as we become aware of them. However, most students have access to personal devices that the district cannot filter (cellphones or personal laptops). We encourage families to have conversations about what responsible AI use looks like on students’ personal phones, computers, and other internet devices. 

Using a personal device to access unapproved AI tools for academic work is still a violation of academic integrity.

II. What to expect from teachers when there are concerns about AI use:

Teachers have access to software that helps review students’ writing process and detects plagiarism and AI use. They also have experience with identifying patterns in individual student writing as well as typical skill levels of various age groups. These tools will help them identify if a student’s work may have been generated or aided by unauthorized AI use.

Teachers may do the following steps to check for academic integrity:

1. Compare student’s prior work samples to the work in question.
2. Complete a verbal comprehension check and have a conversation with the student. Discuss the process for completing the assignment along with a discussion about the content to determine the student’s proficiency.
3. If there is a concern about student proficiency, teachers may reassess using alternate methods, including the following:

• Verbal summary or presentation
• Handwritten assignment
• LockDown Browser quiz
• Process-oriented, multi-stage, multi-artifact assessment

Teachers and administrators will also contact families as necessary based on the leveled response matrix below.

III. Leveled Teacher Responses with Restorative Options

Teachers will use professional judgment to evaluate which level, response, and restorative elements are applicable in a given situation.
