PARK CITY, UT—Under clear skies, McPolin Elementary School students, staff, and families gathered around the flagpole to begin the 2024-25 school year with its annual Flag Ceremony.
Principal Angie Dufner welcomed everyone and expressed gratitude for the local police officers who are present daily on campus and firefighters and ambulance personnel who, though unable to attend, were recognized for their service to the community. In honor of September 11, Principal Dufner also took a moment to acknowledge the importance of this day, highlighting the dedication and sacrifice of all first responders who protect and serve, ensuring the safety and well-being of others.
Dufner emphasized the importance of kindness and respect as the year begins, saying, “At McPolin, belonging means that each and every one of you is an important part of our community. We strive to make sure everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe.”
Three fifth graders—Knox, Saira, and Valentina—shared their thoughts on what returning to school means to them, connecting their words to the school’s theme of belonging.
The students then recited McPolin’s ROCK values—Respect, Organization, Cooperation, Kindness, and Safety—reminding everyone of the behaviors expected throughout the year. These principles help create a positive environment where all students feel included.
Belsy Moscosot, Outreach Coordinator, helped raise the American flag as all in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance together.
The ceremony ended with the McPolin School Song, sung in both English and Spanish, highlighting the school’s diverse mountain town community. The lyrics, which celebrate the school and its students, include:
"McPolin is a beautiful school in the mountains,
McPolin is a school for you and me,
McPolin is making my life so much brighter."
Principal Dufner wrapped up the ceremony by reminding students and staff of the year’s focus on belonging. "We all belong here at McPolin, and together, we’re going to have a great year."
