Honoring Heroes: Park City Schools Celebrate Veterans Day with Community Assemblies
Colton Elliott

Park City, Utah— Schools throughout the Park City School District gathered to celebrate Veterans Day in a tribute of gratitude, honoring the service and sacrifices of military members and their families. Across the district, students, teachers, and community members came together to pay their respects in programs filled with moving speeches, patriotic songs, and messages of freedom and appreciation.

Throughout Park City School District, students expressed their thanks through thank-you letters, shared stories about family members who served, and performed patriotic songs with heartfelt pride. At several elementary schools, younger students opened the assemblies with spirited renditions of “I Love My Country,” a song reflecting their appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy. Older students followed with classic American anthems, celebrating the nation's flag, legacy, and the courage of those who have served.

Throughout each ceremony, veterans were individually honored as students presented tokens of appreciation, and applause filled the rooms to recognize these heroes. At Parleys Park Elementry, fifth graders at gave speeches, sharing personal family stories of military service.

Eston, a fifth-grader, proudly shared his family’s long legacy in the armed forces, from his great-grandfathers’ service in World War II to his father’s journey from military intelligence to Special Forces after 9/11.

“It makes me proud that I am part of a family that has served in our armed forces,” Eston shared. “I know many of my classmates also have family members that have served in our armed forces as well. Today, we thank and honor all of our veterans for their sacrifices to protect and ensure freedom.”

In a powerful address to students, local Park City guest speaker and Navy veteran Mike McComb reminded the audience of the enduring value of freedom.

“Freedom is not something that lasts forever unless we work to protect it,” said McComb. “It’s up to people like us, each new generation, to fight for it, to protect it, and make sure our children and grandchildren can enjoy the freedoms we do.”

Park City’s mayor, local veterans, and community members also attended, adding to the special significance of the day. Principals and teachers expressed deep gratitude for the community's support and dedication, recognizing that these assemblies have become a beloved tradition.

“We hope our veterans felt our sincere admiration today,” said Kim Howe, principal of Parley’s Park Elementary. “Their service and sacrifice mean more than words can express.”

At Ecker Hill Middle School, students and staff celebrated Veterans Day by honoring family members who have served. Students shared stories of relatives’ military experiences, followed by a tribute video showcasing veterans who have profoundly impacted staff and students. The tribute underscored the personal connections and gratitude felt throughout the school community.

“We must never forget that freedom is a precious gift we must protect,” said Angie Dufner, principal of McPolin Elementary.“That’s why it’s so important to thank the veterans in your life—maybe your family members, friends, or neighbors—who have helped protect it for all of us. A simple ‘thank you’ means so much to them.”
