Speech and Debate Excellence: Park City Miners Sweep Regional Competition

PARK CITY, Utah – The Park City High School Miners Speech and Debate team delivered an outstanding performance at the regional competition, finishing 37 points ahead of second-place Tooele. 

“I thought this year would be a rebuilding year, as we lost 15 seniors last spring, but this mostly-novice team has dedicated passion, time and effort to speech and debate, resulting in a win,” said Anna Williams, PCHS Speech and Debate Coach.

The team captured several regional championships: 

• Grace Gladson and Ellen Kuck in Varsity Public Forum
• Alec Lebwohl and Ella Carlson (TMJH) in Varsity Policy
• Rain Labon, Ellen Kuck, and Kennedy McCarthy in Foreign Extemp (three-way tie)
• Reese Gunnarson in Varsity Informative
• Georgia Littlejohn in Varsity Oratory

Students also secured top-three placements in the region:

 • Leo Gorder – National Extemp, 3rd
• Braden Jones – National Extemp, 2nd
• Abigail Bailey – Impromptu, 2nd
• Payton Bullett – Humorous Interpretation, 3rd
• Kennedy McCarthy and Anna Kuck (TMJH) in Varsity Public Forum, 3rd
• Chloe Sawyer – Informative, 2nd
• Garrett Moreno – Humorous Interpretation, 2nd (with Moreno sprinting to the stage for his award)

Additional contributors include Lila Gabbay, Porter Hoffman, Timmy Cuneo, Aidan Bizirca (TMJH), Mia Sawyer (TMJH), Maddie Hadar (TMJH), Kade Savitz, Mia Jamrich, Sophie Dildy, and Shiva Minter.

Special thanks goes to Mark Parker for his incredible work as the team’s speech coach. The entire district is proud of the students for their passion, hard work, and remarkable achievement this season. The State tournament will be held on March 7th and 8th, and the Miners hope for another win.

The Park City Education Foundation has been supporting the Debate program for 13 years, first through its National Competition fund grant, and later through stand-alone Classroom Grants. Today, thanks to PCEF donors, one of its largest Classroom Grants is committed to supporting the Speech and Debate Team, ensuring everyone on the team has the resources to excel on every stage.

Excelencia en Oratoria y Debate: Los Miners de Park City Arrasan en la Competencia Regional

PARK CITY, Utah – El equipo de Oratoria y Debate de Park City High School tuvo una actuación excepcional en la competencia regional, terminando 37 puntos por delante del segundo lugar, Tooele.

"Pensé que este año sería de reconstrucción, ya que perdimos a 15 estudiantes de último año en la primavera pasada, pero este equipo, en su mayoría de novatos, ha demostrado pasión, dedicación y esfuerzo en oratoria y debate, logrando así la victoria", dijo Anna Williams, entrenadora de Oratoria y Debate de PCHS.
